One Day Commission Experience

Your Experience

This is the only process by which I will work on commission. This way we work through everything from discussing the design to the finished piece at the end of the day. Through my experience days its become crystal clear to me that I thrive on meeting my customers face to face. Plus, if you are not wanting to take part in my knife making experience day, this is the best way to ensure that your design influence is realised in your new knife. You get the knife you want, I get my hands dirty.

During this day I will make a Japanese inspired knife of your design up to a maximum blade length of 25cm.

The Process

The knife is produced via what is known as stock removal. This means we start with a sheet of high quality high carbon tool steel and the knife shape is cut from it.

  • DESIGN YOUR BLADE - We will spend some time designing your knife together. This is not rushed, it’s arguably the most important part.

  • CUT YOUR BLADE - I will cut the blade out with a metal cutting band saw, then precisely shape it on the belt grinder.

  • HEAT TREAT AND QUENCH THE BLADE - I quench your blade using a purpose made quenching oil ensuring maximum hardness.

  • TEMPER THE BLADE - the blade is incredibly hard following the quench and it needs to be softened slightly to make it more resilient. The blade is baked at a specific temperature for one to two hours during which work will start on the handle.

  • HANDLE - following selecting your wood from my range of exotic hard woods the process of making the handle will start. A hole is drilled in the handle and dowels used to create a slot that the tang of your knife will later be glued into. I will then shape, hand sand and polish your handle to a stunning high lustre.

  • GRINDING - I will then transform your knife from a hardened template of a knife into a fully functioning blade, thin behind the edge and ready for the kitchen. We are able to achieve an acid etched finish, a plain satin finish or an acid resist spatter finish.

  • HANDLE AND BLADE FITTING - I will then attach the handle to the blade - simple as that really.

  • SHARPENING - I will then sharpen your blade to a sharpness capable of cutting a free hanging hair. it will be incredibly sharp.

AFTERCARE KIT

Due to being asked frequently by previous students I now offer an Aftercare Kit. This consists of "Teddy's Wood Wax", a food safe wax which will keep your wooden knife handle in tip top condition and a ceramic steel which will keep your knife honed between sharpening. This is available upon request when you attend for the additional cost of £10 for the wax and £25 for the ceramic steel.
